Artful Aging

May 20, 2015

The Ohio Arts Council has chosen Chesterwood Village for its artist in residence program “Artful Aging.” This event, led by musician Rick Arnest, takes place May 18th through May 29th.  The event ends with a concert at our independent living community Chesterwood, but the date has yet to be determined.

The Artful Aging Ohio initiative was created to connect senior adults with teaching artists. This allows the older adults to learn about the arts and engage in hands-on art making because the Ohio Arts Council recognizes the power of creation can be a transformational experience.

Donna Collins, Ohio Arts Council Executive Director, explained the importance of creative programs centered on aging adults, “Engaging older adults through arts and aging programs creates lasting benefits for the entire community. Ohioans of all ages benefit when the arts serve as a bridge to foster communication across generations, income, abilities, and cultures.”

Ohio is one of 13 states the National Center for Creative Aging to explore ways to strengthen the presence of the arts in the lives of senior adults. The Hillandale Family of Communities is proud to work with the OAC and NCCA to enhance the lives of their residents through the arts.

Along with “Artful Aging,” the OAC is in the process of developing partnerships with Beautiful Minds, the Alzheimer’s Poetry Project, and the NCCA to expand their reach in providing creative experiences for aging adults.

Join us for this 11-day celebration of the arts as we learn through hands-on art experiences and use our creativity to make a positive change in the lives of our residents.

This event takes place at Chesterwood Village, located at 8073 Tylersville Road in West Chester.
