Pet Therapy and a Pet Parade

April 17, 2015

Hillandale Family of Communities is hosting a Pet Parade at our Chesterwood Village on Thursday, April 30th at 2 p.m. We invite you to join us for this fun event at our West Chester location!

What is Pet Therapy?

Pet Therapy, or Animal Assisted Therapy, is a program where animals are used as a form of therapy to help improve physical, emotional, social and/or cognitive functioning. This can be daily, weekly, or monthly sessions ranging from 30 minutes to 3 hours and can be used one-on-one or in group settings.

How does Pet Therapy work?

Pet Therapy works in a number of different ways. It helps improve physical and cognitive functioning by allowing a patient to interact with the animal in a hands-on way. Standing to groom a dog can help those who need to strengthen their lower body, while buckling a collar might help someone improve their fine motor skills.

Who can benefit from Pet Therapy?

Pet Therapy benefits people in all walks of life, from children in a classroom to people in rehabilitation programs to those in nursing home care.

What effects does Pet Therapy have on humans?

Bringing a dog or cat as a form of therapy can also combat loneliness by giving older adults a little companion for the afternoon. Adults might play with a dog and remember having one as a child, bringing up fond memories, helping improve the emotional functioning.

Interacting with animals is also proven to lower blood pressure and loneliness, and improves social behavior amongst older adults. Bringing a dog or cat into social situations encourages longer conversations between those interacting with the animals.

Join us for our Pet Parade on Thursday, April 30th a 2 p.m. at ourChesterwoodVillage location. You don’t need to RSVP for this event, simply show up. You’re encouraged to bring a friend or loved one who might enjoy some time with our furry friends.
